Ai was a beautiful and quite thin girl with gradient-colored eyes from purple to pink and a six-pointed star in each of her eyes. She was shown to have brownish-red hair on the first chapter cover, but it is shown to have more of a blue-purplish hair color on the volume cover.
Her idol outfit was adorned in a pink aesthetic of varying degrees of lighter and darker shades. The outfit's design has an overall ruffled appearance. A black belt is located on her waist, and other miscellaneous accessories are present throughout the design: three blue stars on her chest, a heart-shaped necklace on her neck and a bunny hairpin accentuated by two gold stars and a pink ribbon.
When Ai was very young, her mother was arrested on a theft charge, and even after her release, she did not care enough to raise Ai anymore, which made her grow up in an orphanage. The environment she suffered being with her abusive mother caused her to think of ways to protect herself. Ai lacked any memory of loving or ever being loved herself, - prominently shown when Ichigo Saitou scouted for idols to start a group. She believed she lacked the qualification to become due to these reasons, showcasing a lack of faith in herself. She became quickly convinced to join when Saitou told her that lying is fine and is, in fact, a desirable trait.
Thus, Ai's perspective started to shift. She convinced herself that lies are a form of love—a love harbored out of the selfish desires of both sides of the spectrum. Ai sought to find an object for her "love.". She wanted to learn how to love by telling her fans that her deceitful lies are, in fact, love. This desire also came when she bore children, but in a different context. She never once said that she loved them because being disingenuous towards them would be terrifying. Nonetheless, she was shown to enjoy her time with her children, and was particularly delighted when the twins did an eye-catching performance with idol lightsticks, which stunned the entire venue.
No matter what, lies allowed her to process the world around her. Within these contexts, she never sought to make things right to the point where she was fine to face the consequences of her actions. Lies were her way of expressing love, hoping that one day they would become the truth. Only when a terrible event happened did Ai finally realize she loved her children, a genuine form of love free from impurity and dishonesty. She was relieved and satisfied to finally be able to experience these true feelings. Even before this realization, Ai had grown concerned over their wellbeing and stressed over the prospects of getting better paying jobs in order to provide for them.
According to several characters through the series, Ai had a unique charisma capable of drawing all the attention to herself when she was in the spotlight. Miyako Saitou and Taishi Gotanda commented that Ai was a very uncommon idol and probably they would never get to see anyone like her, stating that she was a rare case among countless idols who wish to be at the top. Ai was notoriously ambitious and a risk-taker to the point of recklessness, best evidenced by her intentions of both continuing her idol career and having children in secret, which was by all accounts extremely dangerous, as it would jeopardize not only her entire career but have harmful ramifications both to her company and coworkers.
When it comes to her private life outside the stage, Ai wasn't very social, and most of her relationships were with people related to the entertainment industry, showing that Ai used to be a loner. Aqua pointed out that Ai didn't have any close friendships, even among her fellow partners at B-Komachi. The seemingly bright and cheerful personality was nothing more than an act that hid her true personality.
It is noted by multiple characters that Ai had disorderly, impulsive, reckless, clumsy, and asocial behavior with a low level of education, a direct result of growing up in an abusive environment. It wouldn't be until she met her boyfriend that she would have a drastic change in attitude, acting more cheerfully, taking better care of her own appearance, acting more femininely, and reducing her self-destructive inclinations. Although said information was private, observers such as Masaya Kaburagi and Akane Kurokawa were able to correctly deduce that she had found a special someone; the latter in particular was able to observe certain character traits common amongst girls with teen pregnancies, and accurately determine that she had given birth in secret.

Ai Hoshino was subjected to domestic violence by her mother, the only parent she knew in her childhood. According to her mother, When Ai was 8 or 9, her at-the-time boyfriend had begun having eyes for Ai, and the domestic abuse was the result of jealousy.[1]

Later on, Ai's mom was arrested for theft when Ai was at a very tender age. When she was thrown behind bars, Ai had to go live in an orphanage for the period she served her jail time. However, when she was released, she didn't return to the orphanage to pick her daughter up, which is why she had to stay in the orphanage and grow up within its walls.

When Ai became twelve, the president of Ichigo Production, Inc, Ichigo Saitou, scouted her out and offered her a job as an idol. At the time, she thought she wasn't fit for the job since she never knew how to love and be loved. Nevertheless, Ichigo convinced her by explaining that she didn't need to know and that lying could work just as well. He gave her hope - that she could turn that lie into truth. What followed was four successful years as the face of the popular idol group, B-Komachi.
At 16, Ai met and began a secret relationship with 15-year-old Hikaru Kamiki, which resulted in her getting pregnant with twins. After hearing her manager/company president say that the world would not be for an idol with babies at 16, she decided to keep her kids a secret from the outside world instead of completely getting rid of them since she wanted to experience what a family is like. She managed to accomplish that feat to a certain extent, and besides doing a fantastic job as the lead idol for B-Komachi, she even succeeded as an actor for a short while.
Ai was peaking at 20 without being so clumsy to let the cat out of the bag. However, she couldn't fool one of her followers, who eventually found out about it (speculated by the older twin, Aqua Hoshino, to be the result of an information leak by their biological father) and stabbed her because she was "betraying her fans" by having the baby.

She, however, managed to recognize the man who stabbed her as one of the fans that regularly came to B-Komachi fan meetings, and the fan ran away in distress after she pointed out that she kept a trinket given by him. In her dying breath, Ai talked to both her twin children, Aqua and Ruby, about her wish to see them grow up and be with them in every step, now no longer a possibility. She managed to finally say that she loved them, finally able to learn how to love others truly, before she died.

News of Ai's death was announced to the public, and the investigation into Ai's murder quickly came to an end after word got out that Ryosuke Kaihara (the fan responsible for stabbing Ai) had taken his own life.

Aqua Hoshino
Aquamarine is the older of the twins Ai gave birth to, and he is the more reserved of the two. He and his sister Ruby enjoyed watching Ai perform her work. Formerly her doctor, Goro Amamiya in his previous life, he adored her even more after that he reincarnated as her son. Despite the years they spent together as mother and son, Aqua admits that he has not totally known Ai as a person.

Although he was never close nor called her mother even once, he cared so much for Ai. Her death was so much to take that it easily changed him and drove him to the path of vengeance. He was never himself since then. Because of his regret on failing to save her (though he was just a child) he could not think of being happy in life and just spent the next years planning his revenge to make her ex and their biological father pay for her death.

Ruby Hoshino
Ruby is the younger of the twins Ai gave birth to. Unlike her brother Aqua, Ruby always yearned for her mother's attention and affection, elated being reborn as her daughter and wanting to savor the moment. She was Sarina Tendouji, a frail and terminally-illed fan of hers in her previous life. It was because of Ai that she conquered her weakness to move, which always leads to her falling over that seem to last even in her new life that prevents her from dancing. Dancing would later become her forte as an idol and member of the new B-Komachi, combined with her looks that she inherited from her mother. Her mother's work inspired her to become an idol in her footsteps, her death exemplifying what passion was already there.

Ichigo Saitou
Ichigo was Ai's scout and manager throughout her career and was there for her during her pregnancy. He takes great pride in her as his talent and the ace of B-Komachi. Together, Strawberry productions tasted great success and all that's left is the performance to the dome, a feat that almost every performer dreamed of. However, her sudden death hit him pretty hard because she was like a daughter to him. He could not attend her funeral and went missing since then. The reason was that he's looking to uncover the truth behind her death and swore to make the culprit pay. Currently he's helping Ruby to be more popular and also promised to help Aqua in hunting down the killer.

Taishi Gotanda
They first worked together when Ai was given a role as the main female character's classmate on a show he was directing. However, the twins particularly Aqua did not like how her parts were cut a lot and angrily questioned him on the phone. As in little to no screen time. Gotanda admits that its such a waste to do that, especially that her parts came out great. However, that was exactly the reason why the agency of the female lead asked to cut a lot of her parts during editing. As she's way prettier and too cute on the screen their talent would be overwhelmed, which could cause a problem in their image strategy. To make up for this, he offered Ai to star in the film he's also doing which is the That Was the Start but under the condition that Aqua is also included in the cast. The film was a great success, earning him awards and nominations.

When Ai noticed how Aqua is strongly attached to the director, she began to trust him very much, even to the point of asking him to direct a documentary film about B-Komachi. He eventually surrendered to her persistence but he asked her to show her real self or he will stop it anytime. It was almost done and their actual performance to the dome was just waiting to be filmed to complete the documentary until Ai's death suddenly struck. Prior to that she gave him two CDs, one for each of the twins when they turn 15. Because of that he could not help but wonder if she knew of her impending death.
